Scouts compete for MadVenture trophy

11 teams of young people from six troops in Camden, Haringey and Islington explored the Hertfordshire countryside earlier this month, vying to gain the coveted Maharajah’s Sword trophy.

Defending champions 8th Hampstead took the trophy home with them, and all 50+ young people had a great day out in the fresh air.

The Winter MadVenture is North London Scout District’s incident hike, and at about 10 km provides a useful stepping stone to help Scouts prepare for the rigours of GLN’s Chiltern 20 Challenge.

The MadVenture mixes navigation skills with teamwork exercises at the six checkpoints around the route and also has a quiz element.

This year’s event was masterminded by 1st Islington Scout Group, ably coordinated by Scout Leader Chris Hunt. 

We also added a new location and route to the repertoire, basing the event at Croxley Green Scout Group’s HQ and following a surprisingly rural route that’s easily accessible from the Metropolitan line.

After a few years in abeyance, we hope to reinstate the Winter MadVenture as an annual fixture in the district calendar.

Sailing Day in the Lea Valley

Scouts from 8th Hampstead, 8th Holborn, Christ Church, 15th Wood Green and 224 North London took part in our annual sailing day at ESSA Water Activities Centre in the Lea Valley.

We have started the search for a new volunteer manager (District Commissioner) to lead Scouting in Camden, the City of London, Haringey and Islington from early 2020. Find out about how to make a nomination.

District Paddle Sports Camp

60 Scouts from nine troops in our district took part in this year’s paddle sports camp on the Thames at Longridge.

There was a chance to try canoeing, kayaking, bellboating and stand-up paddleboarding before going on a longer journey on Sunday.

Celebrating our Chief Scout’s Bronze and Silver Award holders

Beavers and Cubs from around the district who have earned the top awards in their section – the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award and Silver Award – were invited with their parents to a celebration at the Ramsay Scout Centre this week.

 

Sailing Day at ESSA

Scouts from around the district enjoyed a day of sailing at ESSA Water Activities Centre in the Lee Valley this September.

District Camp 2017 at Phasels Wood

Around 400 young people and 100 adults from 15 groups across Haringey, the City, Islington and Camden gathered at Phasels Wood Activity Centre over the spring bank holiday weekend for North London Scout District Camp. We also welcomed guests from Girlguiding Islington and Cambridgeshire Scouts.
The event took World Scouting as its theme with each group asked to pick a country from the list of nations that have hosted World Scout Jamborees and Moots.
On Saturday afternoon each group offered all participants a chance to try some food and a game or activity from their chosen country. The range included waffles with maple syrup at 8th Holborn (Canada), crepes at 211 North London (France), tossing the caber at 16th Wood Green (Scotland) and a burst of Mozart at 22nd Hampstead (Austria).
Campers enjoyed a full range of the Phasels Wood activities, and North London Scout District also enjoyed the distinction of being the very first to try the campsite’s brand new Human Hungry Hippos inflatable which was delivered the day before camp started. A campfire led by Sally Symons rounded off Saturday’s programme.
On Sunday morning the district assembled for promise renewals, and ACC (International) Katie Davis reminded us all of what it means to belong to the worldwide family of Scouts and promoted opportunities for young people and leaders to get involved in the next World Scout Jamboree.
On Sunday and Monday each group offered a creative activity for young people to try: the options included tie-dye scarves, survival bracelets, ballista making and firelighting with steel wool and batteries.
The camp was rounded off by the hotly anticipated international parade with groups showing off their international costumes and props. After a rigorous judging process under the watchful eye of county commissioner Jack Caine, 12th Hampstead (Japan) were declared the winners with 5th Islington (Iceland) as runners-up.
The contest for best decorated campsite was won by 16th Wood Green (Scotland) whose Scotland-themed display put a smile on everyone’s faces. 5th Islington’s Icelandic effort was also recognised by the judges.

Paddle Sports Camp 2017

More than 60 Scouts took part in our Paddle Sports Camp at Longridge – canoeing, kayaking and bell boating.

Many thanks to the big team of volunteers that made it all happen.

District DofE canoe training on the Thames

Around 60 Explorer Scouts from our district and beyond took part in the annual DofE canoe expedition training camp at Longridge by the Thames in March.
