Kx ESU at State Opening of Parliament

Every year members of Scouting are asked to help out at the State Opening of Parliament – and this year the duty (and privilege) fell to our own Kx Explorer Scout Unit.

During the day they met Sir Keir Starmer, the new MP for Holborn & St Pancras in whose constituency they are based.

North London at the movies: District Camp 2015

750 people from 21 groups and units from around North London Scout District and beyond visited Tolmers Campsite at the spring bank holiday for their inaugural district camp.

As well as Scouting members from Camden, the City of London, Haringey and Islington, invited guests included local Girlguiding units and Scout Groups from Barnet Borough, Southgate and Enfield districts.

The camp had a movies theme; the groups were divided into subcamps each representing a different genre of cinema.

Each group chose a film within that genre to decorate their campsite and as a basis for costumes and props.

The competition was judged by an impartial panel of Tolmers service crew members and on Saturday night, prizes were awarded at a glittering red carpet event:

  • Best dressed subcamp: Sci Fi & Fantasy
  • Best gateway: 211th North London (Star Wars)
  • Best movie poster or graphic design: 5th Islington (Pocahontas)
  • Best dressed group campsite: 1st City of London (Chronicles of Narnia)
  • Best costumes and props: 16th Wood Green (Alice in Wonderland)

An honourable mention goes to 8th Holborn’s Jurassic Park gateway built from the pallets found on the woodpile.

The activities were divided into four zones: Air (Planes), Fire (How to Train Your Dragon), Water (SpongeBob SquarePants) and Earth (A Bug’s Life) and included everything from canoeing to fairground rides and zip wires to trampolining.

We also had visits from rabbits and chickens courtesy of Pets at Home and some exotic reptiles brought along by Animal Encounters.

The evening programme included a campfire led by Sally Symons of Scout Active Support, wide games led by Gavin of 8th Muswell Hill and a silent disco.

On Sunday morning campers renewed their Scout and Guide promises.

The district team would like to extend particular thanks to the staff and crew at Tolmers for looking after us so well.
